Aquascaping - A Must-have Fish Tank Design
63
Experience a totally different fish tank design with aquascaping. All you need to know is the right way to do it.
For many aquarium enthusiasts, aquascaping can be one of the most enjoyable parts about fish tank design. Decorating is always fun, to be sure, but aquascaping is more than just about how pretty it looks. The craft is in marrying the intrinsic workings of the landscape to create an environment that enhances the lives of the living inhabitants of the tank—as well as being aesthetically pleasing to the designer.
Think of the fish first. Remember, your fish are a big part of your aquascape, so if you’re going for a certain vibe with your finned friends, you’ll want to take that into consideration. Also, you’ll need to make sure the materials you’re selecting are friendly to whatever species of fish will be living with them. Be sure to create areas for fish to hide, play and relax.
Think of maintenance second. Sure, the design you create may be so beautiful that angels will cry, but if it’s arranged so that you can’t get to where you need to go to clean your tank properly, it’s not a well-designed tank. Make sure to account for ease and convenience of tank maintenance in your design.
Don’t forget your plants. A plant may be pretty, but it may end up being a living nightmare for you. Certain fish like nibbling on life plants. Other fish (we’re looking at you, Oscars) enjoy digging and uprooting plants. Pick the ones that will work best for everyone involved in the aquarium.

Add non-living elements. From driftwood to teeny treasure chests to diving masks, there are a huge variety of items that can be added to the underwater décor. But don’t forget to do your research. For example, many wood types rot after being in water for long amounts of time. Rocks can harbor parasites and diseases. Be sure whatever you put in the water has been thoroughly cleaned to ensure your fish aren’t affected aversely.
Make sure the end result is something you enjoy. Above all else, fish tank design is for you, the enthusiast. So whether you want a completely natural-looking environment for your fish or you’re creating a multicolored paradise that Willy Wonka would envy, I say go for it. Knowing that you’ve put your personal stamp on your aquarium design will only serve to enhance your enjoyment of your little watery world. Plus, it gives you something to show off to your guests.
